Installing on Android without Google Play

Scrap Golem is on the Google Play Store, but you don't need Google Play to run it. Devices without Google services, or yards that would rather not depend on the Play Store, can install the app directly from our download page. Once installed, the app keeps itself up to date.

Install

On the Android device, open downloads.scrapgolem.com in your browser (Chrome, Samsung Internet, etc.).
Tap Download .apk.
When the download finishes, open it from the download notification or from the Files app.
The first time, Android will say the browser isn't allowed to install unknown apps. Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, then go back.
Tap Install, then Open, and sign in as usual.

The download page shows the stable release by default. Switch to the Beta tab to install a pre-release build.

Updates

Each time you open Scrap Golem it checks for a new version. When one is available you'll be asked to download it, and then to install it:

Download fetches the update in the background; you can keep working.
Install closes the app while Android installs the update. Open Scrap Golem again when it finishes.
Later hides the reminder for a day.

The first time you install an update, Android asks you to allow Scrap Golem to install apps: turn on Allow from this source and come back. Later updates need a single tap, and on Android 12 and newer they usually install without any prompt.

To check right away, open Settings and tap Check for updates. To receive pre-release versions, turn on Beta updates in the same section.

Switching from the Google Play version

If Scrap Golem was installed from Google Play on a device, Android may refuse to install the direct download over it. Make sure the device has finished syncing (no pending changes), uninstall the Play version, then follow the steps above. Tickets and customers are stored in your Scrap Golem account and will be there when you sign in again, but device settings such as printers, scales and cameras will need to be set up again.
